- 205 — Width
- How wide the tyre is, in millimetres, across the tread.
- 55 — Profile
- Sidewall height as a percentage of the width. Here, 55% of 205mm.
- R — Construction
- Radial. Almost every car tyre on the road is radial.
- 16 — Wheel size
- The diameter of the wheel it fits, in inches.
- 91 — Load index
- The maximum weight the tyre can carry. 91 is 615kg per tyre.
- V — Speed rating
- The maximum speed the tyre is rated for. V is 149mph.

Reading your tyre
The numbers on the side of your tyre
This is the size that actually counts, because it is the one currently on the vehicle. It is printed on the sidewall of every tyre.

Profile
The sidewall height, as a percentage of the width. A lower number means a shallower sidewall.
R16
Wheel size
The diameter of the wheel it fits, in inches. R means radial, which almost every modern tyre is.
91H
Load and speed
How much weight it carries and how fast it is rated for. Fitting below your vehicle's rating is not safe.
Front and rear are not always the same. Some cars run wider tyres at the back. Check both before ordering, and if the two do not match, that is normal on those vehicles rather than a mistake.
